Have you heard of a cacao ceremony?
This ancient heart-opening ritual traces back to Mayan and Aztec traditions, where cacao was cherished as a plant of divine origin—known as “food of the gods.” It was used to connect with the heart, ancestors, spirit realms, and the inner self. In today’s world, ceremonial cacao is making a powerful return as a tool for stillness, movement, emotional release, and creativity.
🌱 Why Cacao Works:
Ceremonial cacao contains:
- Theobromine – a gentle stimulant that increases blood flow and energizes the heart
- Anandamide – the “bliss molecule” tied to mood, joy, and emotional clarity
- Magnesium – supports muscle relaxation and stress reduction
Ceremonial doses typically range from 25–35g of pure cacao paste, mixed with warm water or plant milk and sipped with intention.

🌕 Now Enter Amanita…
While cacao opens the heart, Amanita muscaria and Amanita regalis help calm the mind. These sacred mushrooms have been used across Northern and Eastern Europe in shamanic rituals for centuries—especially for dreamwork, visioning, and resetting the nervous system.
Unlike psilocybin, Amanita doesn’t work on serotonin. Instead, it supports:
- GABA Receptors – calming, soothing, and reducing overstimulation
- Glutamate Modulation – which can help support mental clarity and neuroplasticity
✨ In simple terms? Cacao opens your heart. Amanita brings your nervous system into balance. Together, they create space for presence, peace, and inner clarity.
⚡️ The Synergy: Magic Meets Chemistry
Combining these two creates a sweet balance of stimulation and stillness, heart and body, fire and earth.
Amanita and cacao synergy is most impactful when approached with intention—whether in a quiet moment of reflection, a creative practice, or a movement session. You don’t need a full ritual to benefit; what matters is understanding how these allies work and choosing to engage with awareness, respect, and a desire for healing.
✅ Best Use Cases
🔹 Amanita microdose + ceremonial cacao
→ Supports connection, emotional clarity, and creative flow when used with intention and awareness
🔹 Cacao and Amanita combination
→ Supports movement practice, breathwork, or deep stillness when used with presence and respect
⚠️ Important Cautions
- Too much cacao is stimulating and may clash with Amanita’s calming properties—especially pantherina.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and dairy when combining. They can interrupt absorption or trigger nausea.
- Don’t combine with high doses of either unless you are very experienced.
🔬 Nervous System Support
This blend gently supports the body’s natural rhythms—cacao uplifts and energizes the heart, while Amanita grounds and soothes the mind. Together, they offer a balanced experience of clarity, calm, and inner connection.
When used with awareness and a genuine desire to heal, this combination invites presence, insight, and a deeper relationship with your emotional and spiritual landscape.

🌱 What Makes It Ceremonial?
Ceremonial cacao is about more than just the percentage—it’s a fusion of how the cacao is grown, harvested, processed, and consumed. Traditionally, ceremonial cacao comes from heirloom beans like Criollo, often stone-ground at low temperatures to preserve its full array of beneficial compounds such as theobromine and anandamide.
Some brands, like Navitas, offer 100% cacao from non-hybridized Criollo beans grown by small farms in Peru. While their cacao is clean and minimally processed, it’s often sold as nibs or powder rather than the traditional paste blocks used in ceremony. This doesn’t make it lesser—it simply highlights a different format.
What makes cacao ceremonial is ultimately your intention. Whether it’s from a sacred farm or your own pantry, when you prepare and consume cacao with presence, education, and reverence, you activate its deeper potential.
🍫 Using Nibs Instead of Paste
If you’re using 100% cacao nibs—like those from Navitas—you’re still aligned with the spirit of ceremony. Cacao nibs are simply crushed raw cacao beans, retaining their full-fat content and theobromine. As long as they’re unsweetened and minimally processed, they can offer the same mood-lifting and heart-opening benefits.
Some people melt or blend them into warm drinks, but you can also eat a spoonful slowly and mindfully. Chewing them allows you to savor the bitterness and tune in with your body. Remember: the most powerful part of any ceremony is your intention.
🌿Important Notes
- When it comes to pairing cacao with Amanita, Pantherina slurry is a personal favorite for ceremony. It offers a full-spectrum Amanita experience with just a small amount—allowing the cacao to remain the star of the cup.
- Regalis is also a great choice, especially for those newer to Amanita or more sensitive. It has a smoother, nutty-chocolate flavor that complements cacao beautifully without overwhelming it.
- Muscaria, while the most well-known, tends to require a larger amount for noticeable effects and brings a deeper, earthier, more umami taste.
- Choose based on your experience, flavor preferences, and intention for the session.
- I did not include any dosing as you are your own guide. I recommend you start small and allow your body to speak to you on how it affects you. This is for both Amanita and Cacao.
- If you feel spacey: ground with salty snacks, ginger tea, or walk barefoot.

🍫🍄 This is more than a drink. It’s a conversation between plants, fungi, and your spirit.
