The practice of smudging dates back to prehistoric times, and is still very much in use today worldwide for cleansing everything from dwellings to human spirits. However recent research has shed light on the popularity of this activity, revealing that burning certain plant matter actually clears harmful bacteria.

Of course, there are skeptics who belittle the practice as unscientific and akin to magic.


But were here to break free of those LABELS and burst into a world of truth!

A follow up paper published in the same periodical, “Medicinal smoke reduces airborne bacteria,” found that the research concluded that, in addition to health benefits, smudging was a powerful antiseptic.

Mugwort releases its powerful healing properties through heat,  begin to wave the burning stick over the body for purification of the spirit. Placing the dried herb inside your pillow will induce  lucid dreaming, and pleasant dreams and also protects against nightmares.

Chop up dried Mugwort leaves and flowers into fine pieces, place them in a heatproof bowl set them alight, inhale the smoke for creative vision, and heightening one’s awareness. A further extension to Mugwort spiritual properties is to hang the plant in doorways for protection against disease and evil spirits. Some native American Indians used Mugwort as a smudge stick to purify their spiritual and physical environments. Make a small sachet of Mugwort place in the car for safe travel.

Russian Sage Burning Sticks

There are many herbs for smudging. The essence of these herbs goes beyond the obvious use of these plants and vibrates deeper than its physical benefits and constituents. The pure nature of plants has led to people loving them for their traditional/medical use in smudging and cleansing.

Russian Sage (Not a type of sage) However ,”Perovskia atriplicifolia”, commonly called Russian sage , is a woody-based perennial of the mint family, Commonly used for smudging to uplift mood, cleanse a space or object , used much like white sage and other types, removing negative energy from spaces.

How to Smudge

  1. An Organic vessel for burning your herb of choice (a shell for example).
  2. Burning Stick
  3. A fire source (such as a long match or candle)
  4. A fanning tool (not completely necessary but could be helpful if you need to cover a large area such as a home or office, feathers are commonly used)
